Is side one of Led Zeppelin IV really the best music for making out?

Awkward Mark Ratner (Brian Backer) is working up the nerve to ask out Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh) when he asks advice from his buddy Mike Damone (Robert Romanus).  Damone’s five-point plan includes the essential make-out soundtrack,  side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

Cut to Ratner and Stacy in his car on their date and “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin is playing.  When I first saw this movie years ago,  I thought this  was an error,  because “Kashmir”  is not on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.  In fact,  it’s not in that album at all.  It’s from Physical Graffiti.

But Fast Times was written by Cameron Crowe,  a former music journalist.  And it wasn’t until I read a Rolling Stone article about The 30 Greatest Rock & Roll Movie Moments that I understood this is an error on the part of the character.  Ratner is so awkward,  he messes it up Damone’s advice.  He chooses the wrong Led Zeppelin album.  And how did he plan to make out while driving anyway?

Great scene from a great movie.
